The anniversary coin will be struck in .9999 fine 24-karat gold. A series with the same design will be struck in .999 silver, as well.
African American woman featured on U.S. coin for first time:
The U.S. Mint will be celebrating its 225th anniversary by minting a new coin that will feature Lady Liberty depicted as a black woman. The 24K gold coin is the first in a series of coin that will also carry depictions of Asian-American, Hispanic-American, and Indian-American women. “Our hope is that this coin really gets people thinking and talking about what liberty looks like and represents to them,” Elisa Basnight, the chief of staff at the mint said. “Lady Liberty, depicted in coinage throughout the years, is modeled after our society’s continued evolution – and as we as a nation continue to evolve, so does its representation.”

The coin’s heads-side design by artist Justin Kunz depicts the profile of Liberty wearing a crown of stars with the inscriptions “Liberty,” “1792,” “2017” and “In God we trust.”
Depicted on the reverse side, which was designed by Chris Costello, is an image of an eagle in flight. The inscription on the tails side include the nation’s motto, “E pluribus unum,” which translates to English from Latin as “Out of many, one.”
