Science: Male Pheromones & Women’s Superior Sense of Smell?

A study published in December 2008 found that women can tell when a man is interested from the scent of his sweat.

Researchers say the odorless pheromones found in male perspiration can have a dramatic effect on both a woman’s mind and body. A new study found exposure to male pheromones can boost a woman’s mood.

When the researchers combined the body odor with other fragrances, the smell was often masked for men, though women could usually still detect it.

Women are equipped with these extra olfactory cells from the day they are born. Women often outperforming men in many kinds of odor-sensing tests.

There are still many questions to explore, including why women should have this ability hard-wired into their brains, and what mechanism produces this greater quantity of olfactory cells in the female brain.

One theory is that a superior sense of smell helps mother and child to bond after birth; another is it also influences females’ selection of potential mates.

A study published in the November 2014 issue of PLoS ONE found that post-mortem female brains had, on average, 43% more cells and almost 50% more neurons in their olfactory centers (the part dedicated to smelling and odors) than male brains.

In the study, researchers applied extracts of underarm secretions from male volunteers to the upper lips of 18 women between the ages of 25 and 45. None of the women knew that male sweat had been applied to their lips, and some thought they were involved in a study of alcohol or perfume or even lemon floor wax. The women then rated their moods over six hours of exposure; they consistently reported feeling less tension and more relaxed.

“Much to our surprise, the women reported feeling less tense and more relaxed during exposure to the male extract,”

Researchers are now looking at individual compound that are found in male perspiration in hopes of identifying the elements responsible for these psychological and hormonal changes.

Science suggests that the smell of a person can influence your attraction to them. It is a scientific fact that we can be biologically disposed to a certain type of person based on their smell.
